Redness & Rosacea
Many of us long for a smooth and even complexion, but, if you’re affected by redness and rosacea, it can feel that this dream is hard to reach.
There could be many reasons why the skin on your face appears red, and understanding the cause is part of how we can provide a tailor-made solution to help you get your skin under control.
What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a form of skin redness/flushing across the face. It often affects both cheeks, the nose and forehead. Rosacea is commonly caused by sun damage, which encourages small blood vessels to appear on the surface of the skin and become hyperresponsive to external stimuli, such as sun exposure, hot foods, caffeine or alcohol. Typically, rosacea begins as redness across the nose, cheeks or forehead, but can also commonly affect the neck, chest, ears or scalp. Rosacea can also be linked to acne and often you may have areas of breakouts alongside the redness.
What causes rosacea?
As we’ve mentioned, several things can stimulate rosacea; however, medical research is yet to deliver a breakthrough confirmation. The most common causes include abnormal blood vessels, skin peptides or genetics. Sun damage can cause abnormalities in blood vessels through degeneration of skin tissue, causing blood vessels to dilate. If this is a cause of your rosacea, you may have symptoms of flushing, persistent redness and visible blood vessels.
Rosacea can present itself throughout your adult life. It’s often triggered by certain external factors, such as over exposure to the sun, stress, severe changes in weather, hard exercise, hot drinks or alcohol.
Tips for dealing with rosacea
We recommend that you avoid known triggers and use gentle ingredients on the skin for your daily skincare routine to strengthen your skin’s barrier response. For example, try using anti-inflammatory products and then seek professional advice on longer-lasting treatments to diffuse and control.
